The French Riviera is one of the most famous resort areas in the world.  It immediately conjures images of film festivals, glamour, celebrity A-list parties and fashionistas popping into expensive boutiques which line this classy coastline from Menton to St Tropez.

However, drive east out of Cannes and head along the coastline and you stumble across an area backed by the protected forests and the Esterel Mountains.

These breathtaking Red Rock forms called “La Corniche d’Or” are the jewel of the area and the villages of Miramar and La Trayas still remain an unspoilt haven of criques, sandy beaches and inlets. This rugged stretch of the Cote d’Azur is still an undeveloped paradise from Antheor to Le Trayas. The charming little beaches are easily accessible, and if you venture round the rocks you are sure to find your own sandy cove.

The contrast of colours is startling, emerald green vegetation, deep azur blue of the sea touching the rich ochre red of the rocks making it a vibrant palette of Mediterranean colours.  And yet despite being home to many exceptionally famous properties, this part of the coastline is still relatively unfamiliar to the majority of property buyers.
Pierre Cardin’s instantly recognizable ‘Palace of Bubbles’ designed by Antti Lovag, is a completely fusturistic design, complete with open air theatre, and often used for some of the wildest parties during the Cannes film festival.   The property is available for private rental and is just one of the exclusive properties which nestle in the red Rocks.

Another stunning property on the market is Villa Trident, designed by Barry Dierks, the American architect who built more than 100 villas on the Côte d’Azur in the years after the First World War.

The late grand-niece of Dierks partner, Eric Sawyer is now reluctantly selling Le Trident which, in its hey-day was the ultimate Mediterranean place to be invited to.  Famous names such as Pablo Picasso, Somerset Maugham, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor would party together at this exquisite house.

Audree Mevellec, founder of the International Real Estate Specialist, and owner of a luxury Chambres d’hotes in Juans les Pins spent her childhood in the area “Every Sunday, as my grandfather was the inventor of the Compressor, we were doing the trials on the coastal road.  We would leave the house around 4 am, and he would speed up all the way to St Raphael, but always stopped at a certain spot, to admire the view, stopping for a coffee from our thermos to give us the chance to enjoy.  And what a view!  The road trip through the Esterel is always a treat for me down memory lane and is still to this day one of the nicest areas on this coast.”

The truth is, it is always such a reward to find a haven in places which are generally quite crowded, and here the reward is huge.   The infinity line of the Mediterranean stretches as far as the eye can see, the small ‘criques bob with tiny fishing boats, elegant homes tucked away on the hillside, it is a veritable treasure.

Far enough away from the crowds but yet close enough to the nightlife and shops of Cannes, anyone wishing to combine a property with a fabulous view, close to nature with stunning rock scenery need look no further.
